Venice Carnival is the most amazing time to see the floating city. Crazy and outlandish costumes and a dazzling array of masks add another surreal layer to the magical island. Every corner you turn a new treat for the eyes awaits.

The Carnival takes place every year during the ten days leading up to Lent. It began as two months of partying before the period of abstinence! The word Carnival actually comes from the Latin words carne and vale, meaning ‘farewell to meat.’

Venice Carnival is host to extravagant masquerade balls but you don’t have to splash your cash to enjoy the festival. There’s a whole program of events over the two weeks, many of which are free and open to the public. And the best thing about the Canival? Costume spotting and snapping!

10. Simple and sweet

Sometimes keeping it pure and simple works. Amid all the craziness the unadorned costumes have their own pull. It’s cute, it’s girlie and who can resist a backdrop like the Basilica San Marco!

9. Spritz anyone?

Feathered headpieces check, huge dress check, Spritz check! Living their best lives.

8. Golden Girls

I am such a sucker for a golden parasol. I love all the girlie accessories and detailing. Bonus points for a monster hat that looks like a nightmare to wear.

7. Street Style

I love costumes like this that make you feel like you have actually stepped back in time. It’s adorable from top to bottom! Again it looks deceptively simple but the details are beautiful.

6. Watery Wonder

Now we’re getting to the weird and wonderful styles. This is one unusual costume and I love the vibrant colours. Eeirily fabulous.

5. Sunset Sweet

Okay this is one of my personal favourites – I just adore the colour! There are so many intricate details when you look closer and yes I love fans as much as I love parasols (a lot). Is it a purple quality street, is it a carnival costume? – who cares I love it!

4. The Quirky One

From the pop of electric blue to the ornate details this steampunk influenced costume stands out from the crowd. Wacky staff bonus points!

3. Queen of the Ponte dell’Accademia

It’s a full on flouncy half evil queen-half princess dress. I love it.

2. Big, Bold and Beautiful

Red, gold and volume. A costume that commands attention. The complete package!
