If you go to Venice you cannot miss this delightful island. The peaceful surroundings make the perfect contrast to bustling, crowded Venice. The charming, rainbow coloured sugar cube houses are irresistible. All this and more makes Burano the most incredible day trip from Venice.
I had to put this top of the list. Burano is simply gorgeous . The colours of the matchbox houses make your heart sing. If you like your beauty quaint and adorable (as I do) then Burano is the place for you!
Burano has the peace and quiet Venice leaves you craving. If you are a country/small island girl like myself Burano will call to you like a ewe calling to her lost lamb.
Burano does draw crowds and certain areas do get busy. There’s often people congealing on bridges taking photographs. But as you explore you will find completely quiet spots. Bliss! In comparison to Venice it’s a serene island haven. It’s a complete change of pace, even in crowded areas the atmosphere is more relaxed. Nature feels closer as without the winding city streets and the towering buildings Burano is opened out to the sky and the sea.
Whether your insta’s looking drab or you’re a keen photographer, Burano is the answer to all your questions. There are perfect photo op’s down every colourful street. So if you love wandering and snapping away it’s a dream come true!
These are people’s homes where they live and work. As you snap away make sure you are always respectful and considerate. The people of Burano must be well-used to flashing camera phones but that doesn’t mean they love it! It’s okay to appreciate beauty just have thought and care as you go. It is hard to imagine what it must be like for them when you’ve lived in an average, non-insta worthy house all your life!
As I wandered Burano I kept thinking – okay I’ve seen all that and I’ve been that way so that must be it? Wrong! Burano seems small and quaint but as you walk it seems to expand around you. I think the photographs often show the same main streets and you don’t realise the size of it until you’re there.
Burano is fanciful and unique. It is one of those places that stirs the imagination and brews creativity. Just wander and imagine living there. All sorts of things pop into your head on this magical and inspiring island. I definitely would love to live out my days in a pink house in Burano!
Burano is famous for these quirky biscuits! Make sure to try some from Panificio Pasticceria Garbo Giorgio. Yummy!
There isn’t a ton of things to do or attractions on the island but that’s what makes it perfect. Soak up the beautiful surroundings and relax.
The slower pace of life is exactly why Burano makes the perfect Venice escape! Even if you only have two days in Venice make sure to spare half a day at least to visit. You can wizz round the main streets quickly if you’re pushed for time, or you can wander slowly and enjoy the change of pace if that’s what you need! (I definitely recommend!)
For a small place there are a huge number of restaurants to choose from. In the end I chose the location I liked the most. Da Forner has a peaceful spot overlooking the canal. Hardly any people walked past as I ate so it was very relaxing!
Take the ferry from Fondamenta Nuove (Number 12).
If you are on the other side of Venice it might be worth taking the vaporetto up the grand canal to Ca’Doro and walking from there to save your legs.
Make sure you have a vaporetto ticket already as you can’t purchase them at the stop!
It’s a long 40 minute ferry ride but its a great chance to relax and enjoy the serenity of the open water.
What about when you head back to the big city? My top ten things to do in Venice.
What was your favourite day trip from Venice? Are you a huge Burano fan like I am? Let me know in the comments!
